Animal Hope and Wellness China
Where the second chance begins…
Typically we transport dogs from our China Shelter every month but since the start of COVID-19 and the current CDC ban, we were unable to transport. We currently have roughly around 130 dogs left at our Shelter that need to find their way to a family. Please consider donating to the care of these dogs.
The Animal Hope and Wellness China Shelter is located in Changsha, China. The shelter, which was once used for pig housing and then abandoned, is now converted into housing for the animals liberated from The Dog and Cat Meat Trade by our Founder and also by Suki Su, our China Director.
The Dog and Cat Meat Trade takes place throughout Asia on a daily basis where people abuse and torture animals for consumption. They partake in this cruelty for traditional, ritualistic and/or taboo reasons; some even for the day-to-day cuisine. They believe if they torture an animal before death then the meat will taste better - or if you eat the tortured dog meat during the Yulin Festival in June then it will ward off the heat in the summer months.
How Our Shelter Started
Our Founder heard about what was happening across Asia and decided to go over and see it for himself. While there he posed as an undercover American buyer so he could “buy” and liberate as many animals as he could. Sometimes he would steal the animals, other times he would negotiate their release. After many rescues it became clear that we needed a place to house them after rescue where we could assess their injuries, give them a safe place and a second chance.
Suki Su reached out to our Foundation when she heard news of what we were doing throughout the The Dog and Cat Meat Trade and kindly offered up her family home and property as an extension of our Foundation.
Quickly, she was immersed into the rescue world and it became her duty to care for all of the animals in her home. With the help of her friends and family, Suki has cared for thousands of animals - helping them to heal from their physical and emotional wounds; guiding them to trust in people again.
Together Marc and Suki pushed past barriers throughout China to expose slaughterhouses, meat markets and lab testing. Our Shelter not only houses/housed dogs and cats rescued from the DCMT and slaughterhouses - but also has offered a safe haven for goats, pigs, chickens, geese, ducks, and civets rescued from meat markets; beagles from a laboratory and foxes from a fur farm. Outside of the animals from the trade, Suki also will take in strays and animals that have been abandoned or injured - giving them a home and a second chance.
Over many trips, we as a Foundation began to see that the only way to make lasting change in this trade is to put laws into place protecting these animals; showing the people participating in it that the cruelty is not necessary - that they can lead a cruelty free lifestyle and still make a living. With this, we have pushed local government to make the trade illegal, spoken with business owners and asked them to change their work, and started an education center to teach the next generation that compassion through animals is a choice everyone should live by.
Shelter Programs
Education Center
The China Shelter offers an Education and Youth Outreach Center for local students to come and learn compassion through animals.
The goal with this Center is to bring the community together, spread kindness towards one another and animals, and to spread awareness of our mission as a Foundation.
During visits to our Center, students get to interact with all of our animals and learn about each of them and where they came from - they hear stories about rescuing and the hardships the animals have overcome. Here, they get to experience what it means to learn from an animal.
Low Cost Medical and Care Clinic
We are dedicated to the medical care and well being of the rescued animals in our Shelter. Our dogs arrive as victims from unimaginable cruelty and neglect with extremely high levels of stress and anxiety.
With the help of our staff and local veterinarians we are able to assess each animal that comes through our gates.
They have been exposed to or suffer from deadly canine diseases like distemper, parvo, and influenza; Many are infested with worms, maggots and other parasites and get treated for mange, fleas and skin disease. They have mangled limbs needing care and sometimes amputation. Their suffering is profound and we spare no expense or labor to save them and help them recover - We never give up on them.
Transport Efforts
As part of our mission, we transport these rescues at the China Shelter to Foster Family in Sherman Oaks, CA. or to a reputable rescue. Each dog costs roughly $1,000.00 for all the fees and permits to get them here safely.
We make sure that each animal rescued gets into a good home where they are loved and given a second chance. Each rescue/adopter we transport our dogs to are held to the same level of dedication to care as we hold ourselves.
If you are a rescue, within the United States or another country, and would like to take in some of our dogs or are someone who would like to adopt straight from our China Shelter, please use the Contact Form on the Contact Page to send us your information.
